On affairs of San Diego mission: occupant of the mission states he was left in charge of the mission & property Aug 1846 by Father Vicente P. Oliva; a power of attorney from Santiago Argüello shows he still claims jurisdiction of the property; Argüello has also a claim, purporting to be a deed to him of the mission by Pío Pico when he was Gov. of Cal.; according to the best-informed persons on Cal. affairs the claim founded upon that sale is not valid — the order for the delivery of the property has not been executed. Alleged bill of sale to S. Argüello from Gov. Pío Pico: a full conveyance & sale to Don Santiago Argüello of the Mission of San Diego in consideration of his long past services & assistance given Govt, for which he has not been indemnified, on the following conditions: 1. He shall pay to the creditors of the mission; 2. Maintain all expenses to support efficient Cult & religious worship, to be paid by Argüello; 3. Not to allow business more — any excess in value to remain in favor of the purchaser, no one offering more therefor; 4. Excepted from above sale the church & all pertaining thereto & the residence of the officiating priest; 'for that purport to bear signature of Pío Pico.' Remark: said mission still in possession of the officiating priest Vicente P. Oliva; Don Santiago told him in a private conversation in June last that he had never claimed possession awaiting the action of the American Govt, that he did not think the Govt had a right to dispose of the property of the Indians in this manner; but that as others were buying missions, he might as well have one too; supposed to have been given Aug 8 1846 but ante-dated
