Miscellaneous / Unbound Documents, tomo Unbound · BANC MSS C-A 63, document 191

Arms & horses seized by U.S. Vols from Frenchmen: presents the claims of two Frenchmen from whom some officers acting in name of U.S. Govt took a number of arms & horses, giving them receipts to legalize their right to the payment; states further that the troops under Lt. Maddox took away from house of Mrs. Peter Richard at Sta Cruz a quantity of arms & 8 horses, & from his mill several sacks of flour & grain, all during Richard's absence; on his return he asked Maddox for vouchers, & the latter instead of complying had him imprisoned 2 days; on 25 Feb Richard made his complaint to Mr. Colton, Alcalde at Monterey; nothing decided as yet, the alcalde merely insisted on recognizance of the flour & grain, leaving the matter of arms & horses to the [Gov.]
