«Diario de los reconocimientos que verificó el teniente coronel que suscribe en la Frontera de la gentilidad de la antigua California y márgenes del Colorado» — headed «1796 = Diciembre 9 = S.n Vicente», sin firma, with the pencilled note «The original is signed José Joaq.n Arrillaga». Day-by-day from «Junio 14 de 1796» (embarked for S.n Luis in the schooner 'Saturnina') to «Noviembre 21» (returned to S.n Vicente, where the diary was drawn up). Leaf-verified 2026-10-16: four probes from a San Vicente base (San Vicente «dista de Loreto 250 leguas»; escort «9 soldados, 1 cabo, 1 sargento») — Santa Catalina & the Portezuelo (July; 150 gentiles met on the 26th, a runaway girl of S.n Vicente seized), San Pedro Mártir & the port of San Felipe (August; manhunt for the fugitive José Manuel; «supo que los gentiles, en sus peleas, acabaron con los Playanos»), the SE sierra (September), and «la Alameda del Río Colorado» (Oct 18), exiting NORTH to San Diego (Oct 27), where he reported to the Governor (Nov 1–8), returning to S.n Vicente Nov 21. No combat appears in the abstract. ⚠ an earlier reading reported 'Chamijag and Madroño indigenous groups' — corrected: «chamizos y madroño» are vegetation (brush & madrone), listed among encinos/pinería/ocotillo; no ethnonym appears. 67 original pages (pp.279–345)

Arrillaga diary, 1796-12-09, Provincial State Papers, XIV, p.279–345, Archives of California, C-A 8, Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley.Cite the document by series, tomo and original tomo page, as the literature does; the C-A number locates it in the repository. To cite this catalogue entry itself, use https://archivesofcalifornia.com/record/ca8/ca8-d148.html- ⚠ Two corrections, both material. (1) PAGES: the diary's true span is «pp. 279-345» — Savage's own closing citation on n96 (stamp 100) — not p.287–299. It is a 67-page document, not a 13-page one, and the understatement desynchronised the rest of the sequence: the catalogue lost 46 original pages here (345−299) and never recovered them, so EVERY following row cites an original page too low for its own savage binding, by +43 to +54, and the shortfall NEVER CLOSES (still +45 at savage 131, the end of the sequence; measured at 24 savage points against leaf reads). The immediately invented span pp.300–346 was filled by the erroneous entries d149–d164; the offset itself continues well past them. (2) DATE: the row is dated 1795; the document is headed «1796 = Diciembre 9 = S.n Vicente», is unsigned with the pencilled note «The original is signed José Joaq.n Arrillaga», and its day-entries run from «Junio 14 de 1796» to «Noviembre 21». - Previously read Summary reported 'Chamijag and Madroño indigenous groups' among the diary's contents.. Leaf-verified 2026-10-16 (n90–n96): the words are «chamizos y madroño» — vegetation (brush and madrone), listed among encinos, pinería, ocotillo, cholla, nopal, mezcal, palo Adán. No ethnonym appears anywhere in Savage's abstract. Also: the itinerary exits north to San Diego (27 Oct 1796), where Arrillaga reports to the Governor (Nov 1–8) before returning to San Vicente (Nov 21); and no combat with Indians appears in the abstract.
