VERBATIM HEADING: «1797. Mayo 29. S.n Fr.co / José Arguello al Gov.r Diego de Borica.» SUBSTANCE: the presidio school has broken up through the drunkenness of cabo Boronda, who was also the schoolmaster. A few days later, the memorias ship being in port, Sargento Pedro Amador reported Boronda drunk again; Argüello had him arrested and kept some days in irons in the guard-house jail, warning him on release that a repetition would send him to the squadron. He adds that Boronda is otherwise a very useful man, a blacksmith and carpenter. He regrets seeing the school frustrated but cannot remedy it, «porque de los soldados hay tres solamente que sepan medio escribir, y de estos necesita para las escoltas de misiones por ser los cabos legos» — only three soldiers in the company can half-write, and those are needed as mission-escort corporals because the existing cabos are illiterate.
