Verbatim heading: 'o 1800 - Agt.o 7 - Monterrey. - / Hermenegildo Sal. Instrucciones a un soldado en viaje q.e debe hacer p.a conducir un reo.' [gloss: Sal, instructions to a soldier for the journey he must make to conduct a prisoner]. Copied in full. Verbatim opening: 'Orden q.e debera observar el soldado Salvador Espinoza durante su marcha, desde la salida de este Presidio hasta su regreso a el.' He leaves Monterey on the 7th for Mission La Purisima, taking 5 days so his animals are not abused, these being jornadas regulares. The cabo of that mission, Guill.o Cota, or whoever acts for him, is to hand over, secured with a well riveted pair of grillos, the person of Man.l Gonzales and his wife, with everything pertaining to him, arms, munitions and horses, against a receipt. At every mission the prisoners are handed to the cabo of the escolta, who is answerable if the reo takes sanctuary in the church or escapes, all arms to be removed from Gonzales vicinity and the sentry kept far enough off that he cannot seize a weapon. Escolta cabos furnish a man from post to post; the San Luis cabo covers the leg to La Purisima and back as far as San Miguel. Cabos furnish bagajes, or request them from the mission padres, plus four Indians from mission to mission, paying cash at half a real per league for the bagajes, subsistence for Gonzales and family, and 2 reales daily to each Indian for the outward and return trip. Except between La Purisima and San Luis he is on no pretext to sleep in the open with the prisoner. No delay and no indulgence to the prisoner, but no ill treatment either in word or deed unless he gives cause, and verbatim of the wife: 'A la pobre de la mujer se le mirara y atendera en todo con el mayor cuidado y esmero q.e sea posible: en todo se le dara gusto, como no sea q.e pida dormir en el campo, o con su marido en ninguna guardia.' Closes expecting the escort to carry out the order without missing a point, and permitting him to have it read aloud by a person of his choosing. A complete presidio prisoner-transport protocol with mission-relay logistics and paid Indian labour rates.
