Heading verbatim: + 1794 - En.o 14 - Mont. / Arrillaga a Virrey de Mex. (6 Docs) - pp. 316-18. Gloss: Arrillaga to the Viceroy of Mexico, Monterey, 14 January 1794, abstract of six documents. Substance: he has not received the R.l Orden of 20 Marzo on relief to English ships; he acknowledges that the three English letters he sent on 2 Mayo (93) were received and that individuals of that nation may send more, which will be forwarded punctually by way of their ambassador in Madrid; acknowledges the note of 24 Ag.to ordering $7.000 delivered to the Hab.o Gral. to cover presidio drafts; acknowledges approval of the contract made with Ant.o Domingo Henriquez p.a ensenar a los indios su oficio de tejedor; on hemp, he was ordered to promote its cultivation in the Peninsula and answers that el paraje se presta p.a la produccion, segun pruebas q.e se han hecho, and that all the seed on hand will be sown, q.e es poca. The artisan and mill report demanded by the order of 6 Set.e 93 continues on the following leaf: the artisans trabajan con esmero, mas p.r el poco tiempo q.e tienen, o p.r la ninguna aplicacion de los naturales, no se han hecho progresos visibles, except some taught by the weaver Ant.o Rodriguez in several missions, whose pupils now use wool to make jergas y frazadas, and others by the carpenter Jose Ant.o Ramirez at S.n Carlos. The Father President distributed the tradesmen: to Mision de Sta Clara the tanner (curtidor) Miguel Sangrador and the miller Cayetano Lopez, whose pupils are making progress; Pedro Garcia, blacksmith, at S.n Fran.co; at S.n Carlos Joaq.n Rivera, carpenter, and Pedro Alcantar, who is occupied on the church construction. The stonecutters and masons Santiago Ruiz, Salvador Rivera and Pedro Alcantara, assigned to Monterey by the Father President, are employed on church works and have no pupils. On mills nothing has been done because the miller is serving as carpenter at Sta Clara, though several sites exist where mills could be built, particularly at Mision de S.n Ant.o.
