'Dificultades con P. Palou' — LONG letter spanning n60–n62 (Sav pp.61–63) with continuation at n63 (orig p.103–8); companion header's orig-page field for n60–62 reads 'p.60?–63' (likely Savage pages in error). Fages recounts his dispute with the friars: went out to receive P. Palou when soldiers reported he was coming to the Toro, met him 'con un semblante tibio y casi fétido,' lent him 3 soldiers as escort to go to Santa Clara, mounted him on his 3 best beasts; when Palou arrived at the Real would not enter by the front door, no doubt to give offense; Fages nonetheless ordered 2 cannon-shots fired at his dismounting & accompanied him in the little boat; Palou then went to the Mission several times & experienced various slights, & things the P. Matías permitted, stamping feet on the ground & shouting for lack of respect in his presence & of 2 other friars who supported him. Fages believes this stir was moved by the writ under P. Piéras (Fageras?) command, which precipitated P. Matías. VERBATIM (n61→n62): '...qe le atajó la nota vulgar de Frailero; y qe ellos han correspondido mal á este cariño, y pr frilera le faltan á lo qe le deben... no como á Fages, sino como á Gobernador' [they repay him ill and out of friar-partisanship fail in what they owe him — not as Fages but as Governor]. [what the vulgar call 'persecuting the friars' is merely him doing his duty as Governor]. Closes (n63, orig p.103–8) protesting he venerates religious persons but will not swerve from duty; conscience justifies him. Survey sampling read of n61 adds passages the companion did not transcribe: strict orders that no religious embark 'sin superiores órdenes' (Dominican President denied leave to Guadalajara); P. Caballero doubting his word on the inventory.

The originals of these records burned in the 1906 San Francisco fire. What survives is Thomas Savage’s 1870s copy, and this page describes that copy.
