VERBATIM heading: '1785 - Mayo 29 - Mont. / Fages á P. Palou

Provincial Records, tomo III–IV · BANC MSS C-A 23, document 1804

VERBATIM heading: '1785 - Mayo 29 - Mont. / Fages á P. Palou. Ocupar internamᵗᵉ la Presᵃ de Misiones' (Savage writes 'internamᵗᵉ'; the sense is plainly interinamente, i.e. to hold the Presidency of the Missions on an interim basis). Gloss: To occupy the Presidency of the Missions on an interim basis. Substance: Fages says he feels infinitely Palou’s broken health; that 'la Sra. (del Gob.)' shows herself more docile and P. Matias tells him he expects her to come and speak with him; he thanks Palou for what he has worked toward their reconciliation; that he has learned that many persons and all the Fathers agree, and Savage then quotes Fages directly: 'en qe pr naturaleza recae en V.R. la interina Prelacia ó Presidencia; yo de mi parte le suplico á V.R. influya en el particular con la caridad qe acostumbra sin otro objeto qe el bien público de estas gentes.' Direct evidence of Fages soliciting Palou to take the mission Presidency after Serra’s death, entangled with Fages’s marital quarrel.
