'Pelea con Indios' — on Nov. 17 the cabo of the San Juan mission escort (12 leguas N of Monterey presidio) reported 'los gentiles de la sierra' had killed 6 Indians and 2 women of the rancherías next to the mission, the same who killed a Christian Indian 'el mes de Set.bre anter.r'; Borica sent sarg.to Macario Castro with 10 hombres de cuera, 8 Christian Indians and 24 aggrieved gentiles; met with arrows, the troop fired, killing 'el capitan principal de nombre de Fatilloste' [initial F/T ambiguous; Bancroft I:558 prints 'Tatillosti'] and badly wounding another; recovered two women presumed dead 'de la tribu Aüsaimes'; captured two Indians, kept at the mission to learn Spanish as 'guias y interpretes'; one soldier arrow-wounded (flint lodged, later extracted, recovered). Will pursue the malefactor ranchería called 'Osos'; vigilance enjoined on the San Juan escolta. Cf. Bancroft I:558 (cites Prov. Rec. vi. 106-7 = these ms pages).
