Inspection report. 7 months since taking possession at Loreto, 4 spent travelling to Monterey

Provincial Records, tomo V–VII · BANC MSS C-A 24, document 493

Inspection report. 7 months since taking possession at Loreto, 4 spent travelling to Monterey; visited 10 Dominican and (n359) 9 Fernandino missions. Rules settled with the P. Presidente: 'el buen trato qe se ha de dar a los Indios, el trabajo proporcionado en qe se han de emplear; qe las piezas en qe de noche se recojan las Indias solteras y jovenes... sean ventiladas pa evitar el qe les entre la corrupcion' [good treatment, proportioned labour, ventilating the night lock-ups for single/young Indian women]; no transplanting Indians from healthy to unhealthy missions; caminos reales kept up with Indian labour; no large church/rancheria/stone padres' houses without notice to the Gobierno, since missions 'han sacrificado a los Indios con esta clase de obras de lujo'. n359 adds: the 5 presidial habilitados to buy jabon, fresadas, jerga and cuereria in the province instead of from S. Blas and Mexico; vecinos to make soap and hides; hemp planting because 'la pita usual no sirve'; schoolmasters (one already at the pueblo de españoles de S. Jose); mission escoltas to be inspected every two months.

The originals of these records burned in the 1906 San Francisco fire. What survives is Thomas Savage’s 1870s copy, and this page describes that copy.
