SUBSISTENCE OF THE SETTLERS. Underlined heading: “Borica al Virrey

Provincial Records, tomo V–VII · BANC MSS C-A 24, document 743

SUBSISTENCE OF THE SETTLERS. They sell their surplus to the presidial habilitados; until the population grows and turns industrious there is no point in seeking outlets for goods they do not have. On the missions: as a general rule they do not raise the harvests needed to keep their neophytes under the bell; the blankets, sayal, jerga and cotton pieces they weave do not suffice to clothe them, though San Juan Capistrano, having wool, makes some for sale to the presidios. Concludes (n415) that only Santa Clara, Purísima and Santa Barbara make aparejos, costales and cofinillos for the habilitados, and that the peninsula's small industry is not hampered by want of an outlet. Verbatim identification note: N.S.a de Guadalupe recorded as written; the two Alta California pueblos of 1797 were San José de Guadalupe and Los Angeles, so the phrase may be Savage's or Borica's compression.

The originals of these records burned in the 1906 San Francisco fire. What survives is Thomas Savage’s 1870s copy, and this page describes that copy.
