FULL-TEXT LETTER with its own heading, verbatim: '+ (Sin fecha ni lugar) se cree Monterey. English gloss: the captain of the English frigate Racum, lying at San Francisco presidio, sent him the enclosed dispatch; the ship was damaged coming out of the Columbia River and is now repaired; supplies having been furnished her she sailed with a brig she had brought in company, which arrived with her crew sick and short of provisions; relieved, they sailed for the Columbia to take charge of the establishments seized from the Anglo-Americans. The Racum is one of three that left the River of London the previous year and came together to Rio de Janeiro, where they separated for the coast of Lima, the Racum being ordered to the Columbia to take that establishment, as she did. I am inferring, not asserting, that Racum is HMS Racoon and the establishment is Astoria, and that the letter therefore belongs to 1814; Savage records no date and no place and the surrounding pages are 1813.

The originals of these records burned in the 1906 San Francisco fire. What survives is Thomas Savage’s 1870s copy, and this page describes that copy.
