Verbatim heading: '1844 Julio 1º Mont. English gloss: Gregorio Castanares, senior regidor and acting second alcalde of the capital, Monterey, 1 July 1844. That is: a formal conciliation hearing at Monterey between Victor Prudon, captain and brevet lieutenant colonel, and Jacob P. Leese, first alcalde of Sonoma, over slander. The hombres buenos were Manuel Castro for Prudon and Antonio Maria Osio for Leese. Prudon demanded that Leese make him public satisfaction at Sonoma and beg pardon for the personal insults he had inflicted. No conciliation was reached, so the act was drawn up leaving both parties free to pursue their right before the competent authority.
