Verbatim heading: '1843 Dic. 11. Mont / José Rafl Gonzalez - al Comandte Gen. -' English gloss: Jose Rafael Gonzalez to the commandant general, Monterey, 11 December 1843. Substance, Savage verbatim: 'Pide que por su avanzada edad y achaques se le dé su jubilacion del empleo de Comandte de Celadores que desempeña.' That is: on account of his advanced age and infirmities he asks to be retired from the post of commandant of the customs guards which he holds. This is the same Rafael Gonzalez listed as Comandante de Celadores, propietario, salary 1800, appointed by the Supreme Government 17 March 1837, in the Monterey customhouse staff table on leaf n303.

What survives is Thomas Savage’s 1870s copy, and this page describes that copy.
