Provincial State Papers, tomo VII–VIII · BANC MSS C-A 4, document 126

'Relación de dificultades con los Indios.' Reaching San Miguel (12th) he put the mission in a state of defense against a gathering of the Carmen, Ensenada & Sierra gentiles; an Indian spy sent by the Ensenada Indians scouted the mission; a captured gentile confessed; a 13-man party (cabo Ortega + 6 soldiers + 2 interpreters, ordered *not* to harm but to warn) rode out; a defiant ranchería threatened to 'caer á matar á los soldados'; the detained informant then named 'more than 50 rancherías' (Carmen, Tigre, Sierra de San Juan Bautista, etc.) planning to come 'acabar con todos' this line and rob the mission's horses/cattle/clothing — so Ortega resolved to build 'una muralla de firme y punta' and hold at San Miguel. ⚠️ the heading also reads '*examen y confesión de un extranjero*' (foreigner?) — unclear from the text; re-read. A major Baja-frontier indigenous-resistance document. Orig. pp.232–235.
