Provincial State Papers, tomo VII–VIII · BANC MSS C-A 4, document 141

'Matanza entre Indios.' Sends a party after two long-fugitive Christian neophytes of Mission San Buenaventura hiding in the rancherías toward Los Angeles / the Escorpión sierra; and reports that four neophytes of the new Mission Santa Bárbara, joined by gentiles, attacked a ranchería near the San Buenaventura sierra in *revenge* (for three relatives killed there earlier) and killed a man — Goycoechea is running a *pesquisa secreta*. Also: the church walls & the Teniente's house are finished. A vivid neophyte-participation-in-inter-ranchería-revenge source. Orig. pp.254–256.
