Heading: 'José Joaq.n de Arrillaga á Fages sobre reparacion de una Iglesia' — spans n258-n260 (ends on n260 with the cite 'pp. 217-220'). Arrillaga acknowledges the Asesor's dictamen, approved by the Comandante General, on repairing the Loreto presidio church; he lacks mason, peons and lime. 'Establécese que una tercera parte de los gastos debe sufrir la R.l Hac.da, y que las otras dos se distribuyan entre los vecinos, oficiales y soldados de la Comp.a Presidial'. He objects that Loreto has no real vecindario: all residents serve in the troop or marinería except four — Julián Morillo (just discharged after 20 years' service), Jaime Morillo (living with his soldier son), Cristóbal Cota (kept by his soldier stepson), and 'el viejo Juan de Dios separado de la recua del Rey' — so 'no es creible que esto se pueda llamar vecindario'. The two-thirds would thus fall on officers and soldiers, whose means are limited, who are separated from their families and suffer 'mucha hambre y desnudez'; the missionaries' few Indians are already needed for mission and rancho work. He asks Fages to intercede to relieve the troop of the whole cost.
