Provincial State Papers, tomo VII–VIII · BANC MSS C-A 4, document 319

'Sobre pelea de Indios' — the gentiles of the ranchería next to Mission Santa Clara fought the 'Serranos,' with several *Cristianos* (neophytes) of the mission taking part; Sgt. Pedro Amador dispatched, found 2–3 Christians already flogged by the friars (RR. Ministros); he reprimanded the *cabecillas* of all the neighboring rancherías, warning that if they again 'convidaban algunos cristianos para sus alborotos, serían castigados,' and punished the Christians likewise. ⭐⭐ Second incident: a Gentile called 'el Corporal Trabajador del Pueblo' (a mission-Indian work-foreman) 'andaba haciendo una junta para ir á dar guerra á otros Gentiles por una muger' — seized, given 'unos azotes,' freed after 3 days' arrest. Indigenous inter-group warfare + a woman as *casus belli* + neophyte participation + a mission office-holder leading a raid (cf. Doc 139). Orig. pp.225–226.

The originals of these records burned in the 1906 San Francisco fire. What survives is Thomas Savage’s 1870s copy, and this page describes that copy.
