Gloss: reports that Felipe Gutiérrez has deserted in company with the Indian Mateo, perhaps because of his unwillingness about his marriage, and infers the two have struck out for the Sierra. Named soldier and named Indian fleeing together; a stated motive (reluctance over the marriage) is unusually explicit.
