Dep. State Papers, Benicia (Custom House), tomo I–VIII · BANC MSS C-A 41, document 161

Verbatim heading: 1845. - Set. 26. Mont. / Admor. Alvarado - al Receptor B. Diaz. English gloss: Administrator J. B. Alvarado to Receptor Benito Diaz (San Francisco), Monterey, 26 September 1845. (The abbreviation read here as f.ha. is written in a compressed flourish; the sense is oficio dated the 9th of the current month.) The Monterey aduana forwards an order restraining the San Francisco receptor: he is not to obstruct whalers going to water at Sausalito, nor stop their boats from going to the neighbouring ranchos to buy provisions. This is the administrative reversal that the earlier hard line against Sausalito (see the published n132 row of 24 Feb 1844) had imposed. The heading stands at the foot of n134 and the body runs onto gap leaf n135, closing there with the cite p. 242.

The originals of these records burned in the 1906 San Francisco fire. What survives is Thomas Savage’s 1870s copy, and this page describes that copy.
