⚠ RETROSPECTIVE Bancroft-era note, NOT a primary 1830s document — Savage's inserted «(Nota:...)» spanning n187–n189, signed «Recuerdos de Vicente Gomez - Febº de 1877». On why the missions fell into misery after secularization: governors named «hombres ineptos pª la Administracion de ellas, y no solo ineptos, sino qe. de mala fé, solo pr. favoritismo», given to «la embriaguez y el juego», who «saqueaban las Misiones sin misericordia, trasladándolo todo á sus casas, á las de sus parientes»; «El Gobierno disimulaba todo esto» to keep administrators content and soldiers available against a threatened expedition from Mexico.

This entry is not citable as a document. The catalogue withdraws or qualifies it, so read the note above and follow it to the record that supersedes it. No citation is offered here on purpose.
The originals of these records burned in the 1906 San Francisco fire. What survives is Thomas Savage’s 1870s copy, and this page describes that copy.
