On gentile catechumens living inside the Christian pueblo: 'aun existen unos viviendo entre el pueblo cristiano, con los mismos usos y costumbres de su gentilidad, sin poder evitarlo, ni darles la debida instruccion' [= some still live among the Christian townspeople with the same usages and customs of their heathenism, and he can neither prevent it nor instruct them]; and 'aun de los antiguos cristianos hay muchos que solo se distinguen de los gentiles en el nombre' [= many long-baptized Christians differ from gentiles in name only], the reigning vices being 'el ladronicio, la rapiña, la embriaguez y la lasivia', with 'el Alcalde y algunos de los regidores' themselves among the worst offenders.
