NEOPHYTE PETITION against the mission administrator — the Indians (fewer than 60 still working

State Papers, Missions, tomo VI–XI · BANC MSS C-A 51, document 47

NEOPHYTE PETITION against the mission administrator — the Indians (fewer than 60 still working; the rest fleeing) beg Alvarado to remove him: he uses mission labor for his own private wheat crop, has exhausted the cattle, brands the best mission horses with his own iron, trades away the mission's chickens/eggs/hides for private profit; they protest being flogged ('que no nos pelen las nalgas á azotes'), reject administrators 'que no son hijos de California,' and ask to name their own trusted one. Signed by the neophyte in his own hand ('de su puño y letra') for 'la Comunidad de neófitos'; Alvarado referred it to Visitador Hartnell for secret investigation (see Expanded Entry)
