State Papers, Missions and Colonization, tomo I · BANC MSS C-A 52, document 40

Previously uncatalogued — recovered by the 2026-08-27 coverage audit: it lay inside the span of a grouped entry covering n240-n269, which satisfied every coverage check while concealing it. Heading verbatim: '1797 - Abril 30 - Misn. de Sta. Clara / Fr. Franco. Migl. Sanchez al Gobr. Diego de Borica: Limites de la Misn. de Sta. Clara y pueblo de Sn. Jose.' [= 1797, April 30, Mission Santa Clara. Fray Francisco Miguel Sanchez to Governor Diego de Borica: boundaries of Mission Santa Clara and the pueblo of San Jose.] Sanchez opens the 1797 boundary case. He reminds Borica that on 12 December of the past year, 1796, they had settled that the Senor Ingeniero would come to make the reconocimiento of the boundaries of this Mission of Santa Clara and the Pueblo de San Jose; supposing that officer is now at San Francisco, he asks Borica to order him to go and survey those limits, and at the same time to give him a traslado of the limits and of the Plan that certain individuals of the pueblo have laid before Borica, 'y con esto vera V.S. lo mal qe. le han informado en el particular'. Once the true mojoneras are cleared up and both sides satisfied, they can move to 'la propuesta consabida', everything secured under documents so that the diligencia is on record for all time, 'y de este modo se evitaran Pleitos, y desensiones ahora, y en lo sucesivo'. This is the opening move of the Santa Clara / San Jose boundary dispute that the catalog already documents in records d37, d38 and d39; the file's first document was the one with no record.
