Boundary diligencia between Mission Santa Clara and Pueblo San Jose. May 1797 the four surviving founding settlers were taken to the boundary marker 1,958 varas from the old dam and examined]. Each is asked whether the surviving mojonera, the one 'q.e se halla dentro del Potrero de los Padres', is the one set at the original division, and whether the bearings match the Plano, 'esto es la una al Norte, 5 grad.s Nordeste; y la otra a Sur-Sudoeste'; all answer yes, 'q.e son las mismas q.e le senalo D.n Jose Moraga'. Gonzalez and Amesquita cannot sign; Tiburcio Vasquez signs for them. In the 3a declaracion Ignacio Archuleta adds that when the padres began sowing beyond the line the settlers complained to the then alcalde: 'representaron al Alcalde q.e lo era entonces Manl. Alcalde no hizo caso a dha. conversac.n' [= the alcalde ignored the settlers' protest against mission encroachment]. Closing certification: 'Esto es lo q.e espusieron los testigos arriba citados, y presenciaron las medidas de mojoneras en el ano de 1782, cuando repartio las tierras y solares D.n Jose Moraga (ya difunto)' [= the witnesses had been present at Moraga's 1782 distribution of the pueblo's lands and lots]; signed 'Tiburcio Vasquez = Alberto de Cordova = Jose Tiburcio Vasquez'. Spans n271-n273; declarations numbered 1.a, 2.a, 3.a, then 5.a (no 4.a appears).
