Heading verbatim: 'Diego de Borica: Instrucc.n de dirigir la fundacion de la nueva Villa de Branciforte' [= Borica's instruction for conducting the founding of the new Villa de Branciforte]. Eleven articles. Art. 1: 'Su prim.r cuidado ha de ser mantener a los poblad.s en paz y buena armonia, celando s.re sus buenas costumbres, sin consentir amancebamiento, juegos prohibidos, ni borracheras, castigando a los q.e incurran en estos vicios y en el de no concurrir a los trabajos pub.cos y particulares' [his first care must be to keep the settlers in peace and good harmony, watching over their morals, permitting no concubinage, prohibited gambling, or drunkenness, punishing those who fall into these vices and those who fail to attend public and private works]. Art. 2 compels attendance at Mass on days of precept, roll called, three hours in the stocks for unexcused absence; art. 3 the rosary of 'M.a S.ma' at the close of work, in the guard-house for now, later in the new villa; art. 4 compliance with the annual Lenten precept, certificate to be despatched to the governor. Es un punto q.e se ha de celar escrupulosamente' [he shall not permit the present settlers nor those later added to have dealings or contracts with the Indian men or women of the mission, still less to abuse the latter illicitly; to this end they shall be forbidden to go to the rancheria by day or night; it is a point to be watched scrupulously]. Art. 6: the mission is to furnish the necessary provisions, rationed 'con proporc.n al n.o de indiv.s de cada familia', married men's families cooking for the bachelors as is customary among the troops. Art. 7: from the effects delivered by the habilitado he shall supply only what is strictly needed, per each settler's account. Art. 8: carts, tools of agriculture and smithing given for common service to be kept in best condition. Art. 9: every Sunday without fail a review of the settlers' clothing, arms, saddlery and tools, recovering whatever they have sold off and punishing whoever acts so abandonedly. Art. 10: 'Interin llega el Ingen.o y levanta el Plano del terreno p.a senalar las tierras de riego y tempor.l q.e se ha de dar a cada poblad.r, se procedera a la fabrica de alojam.tos interin.s y corrales capaces p.a ganado mayor y menor, dando mensualm.te parte al Gob.o de lo q.e se adel.te y del proceder de los Colones' [until the engineer arrives and draws the plan of the ground for assigning irrigated and dry-farmed land to each settler, interim lodgings and corrals for large and small stock are to be built, monthly report to the governor of progress and of the colonists' conduct], the report to go by the Santa Clara mail on the day the corporal of the escort sends his diary to the San Francisco presidio. Cualesquiera desavenencia atrasa el verdadero servicio' [lastly the commissioner is to use every mark of respect toward the reverend father ministers of Mission Santa Cruz in whatever correspondence arises, giving no ground for well-founded complaint; any discord sets back the true service].
