Verbatim heading: '1800 Obre. 3. Megico / Marquina al Gob.or int.o de Calif.a = Sobre si se comunico alg.a orn. p.a q.e los com.tes de los buques no admitan otros efectos q.e los de las Misiones y presidios.' Substance: on the expediente opened at the instance of D. Juan Ygnacio Mendez, the Governor should have reported on both points, not merely returned the file pleading ignorance because the matter fell in his predecessor time. The file contains a writing of Mendez, who went to those provinces to sell some goods, and a report of Tte. de Navio D. Garcia Zerpa, commander of the ship that carried him, stating that he did so meaning to work as a carpenter in the missions. The Governor could have settled the point by having the archive of that government examined, where the register of the artisans sent by this superior government must exist, together with the order in question. He is now required, in conformity with the pedimento of the Fiscal de Real Hacienda, to have that archive examined and report, stating also the drawbacks he indicated to shipping goods from San Blas for the peninsula when a spare vessel is available and doing the same on the return.

The originals of these records burned in the 1906 San Francisco fire. What survives is Thomas Savage’s 1870s copy, and this page describes that copy.
