Provincial State Papers, tomo X–XI · BANC MSS C-A 6, document 153

'INFORMES PARTICULARES' — Fages's confidential exit assessment to his successor. OFFICERS: José Joaquín Arrillaga 'un buen oficial'; José Zúñiga apt w/ the Diegueños; ⭐ Goycoechea's pretensions — his order to register a few cattle 'fue causa que se mataron dos soldados'; Diego González incompetent ('abuso del mando, falta de inteligencia… no tiene narices ni adiento'); José Argüello good; ⭐ 'para la habilitación solo queda el alférez Sal en quien echar mano, porque los alféreces Grijalva y Cota son casi legos y han dado pruebas de abandono' (Sal the only one fit; Grijalva & Cota nearly illiterate + negligent); only sgt. Vargas useful (his amanuensis). MISSIONARIES: Dominicans OK (pres. Fr. Juan Antonio Gómez); ⭐⭐⭐ the Fernandino (Franciscan) friars 'opuestísimos á las máximas del reglamento y Gobierno… quieren ser independientes y absolutos cada uno en su misión' (fights w/ Padre Sta María at San Buenaventura); ⭐⭐⭐ the San Francisco mission friars 'han hecho nuevo y formal establecimiento á 7 leguas de distancia,' keeping most of the neófitos — and Santa Clara 'lo mismo.' ⭐⭐⭐ The fugitive-Indian-pursuit problem (separate paper 'Confesiones').
