THE LAND-TITLE BOMBSHELL — ✓ VERIFIED vs scan n8 (2026-07-06); ✎✎ SCAN CORRECTED n6→n8 (the old n6 holds Chico's May-1836 election letters, not this doc — the link had pointed to the wrong leaf; the volume is bound out of tomo-page order): since LA's founding, land/solar grants were made 'primero por comisionados, y después por los Ayuntamientos verbalmente, y sin otra formalidad que señalar á los agraciados el sitio y estensión que habían de ocupar'; ✎ 'la Instrucción de José Francisco Ortega de 1782' (the row's '1782 Instruction' — now attributed on the MS to Ortega, cf. C-A 3 Doc 468) required the Gobⁿᵒ to issue *despachos*; 'y que no hay un propietario que pueda exhibir un título legal de sus bienes' (✓ verbatim)

The originals of these records burned in the 1906 San Francisco fire. What survives is Thomas Savage’s 1870s copy, and this page describes that copy.
