Rewritten 2026-09-22 from a direct reading of the leaf (previously read only in summary). The entry formerly described a document the leaf does not hold; its erratum records the original text. ⭐⭐⭐ VERBATIM HEADING: «1797. San José. Enero 8. / Gabriel Moraga al Gob.r Borica. Aconseja se mude, por los riesgos de Inundacion, el pueblo al otro lado del rio. Peligrosa posicion para ataque de Indios.» SUBSTANCE: the only remedy against the flood risk is to move the pueblo to the far side of the river, onto the same mesa that runs to the mission, since even in high water the crossing would not be difficult; the whole vecindario but four individuals, and cabo Vallejo, favour it. When Moraga held the command here a flood so great came that it nearly carried off the houses and left them besieged, unable to go to mass; they had to go three leagues round to reach the ford for the mission, could not use the horses nor inspect the caballada, «y ofreciendose asi una buena ocasion para los gentiles ó Indios Cristianos a hacer un ataque». For these reasons, and for sowing wheat and maize, pasture for stock, passage of carts, water, timber and firewood, the far bank offers better advantage. Signed Ign.º Vallejo; Moraga recommends the removal.

Correction to this entry.
The originals of these records burned in the 1906 San Francisco fire. What survives is Thomas Savage’s 1870s copy, and this page describes that copy.
