«Branciforte al Gob.r de California = sobre haver recibido los planos del Puerto de S.n Diego y ensenada del canal de S.ta Barbara» [= receipt of Alberto de Córdova's harbour plans]. Answers the governor's letters of 13 Dec. and 20 Jan. (no. 365) on «el estado en q.e se hallan el puerto de S.n Diego y ensenada del principe en el canal de S.ta Barbara», enclosing «los planos hechos por el Ingeniero extraordinario Alberto de Cordova», and on the damage the waters had done «en el fuerte de S.n Joaquin del puerto de S.n Francisco». Córdova offers to make «el mapa gral de la Nueva California» once the reconnaissance of the whole coast is finished. The Fiscal de R.l Hacienda gives the key policy ruling: «la defensa de aquellos establecimientos deve hacerse por la marina á menos costos de los que serian necesario invertir en fuertes y otras obras q.e despues de todo no embarasarian el desembarco de los enemigos en alguna de las ensenadas de S.n Juan del principe y S.n Louis» (cf. his oficio of 21 Set., no. 301) — i.e. seaborne defence preferred over fixed works. Notes there is «no haver proporcion de otros ausilios que los de las 2 fragatas» destined for the purpose; approves the governor's providencias «dirigidas á evitar se pierda ó deteriore la artilleria cureñas y demas utiles del fuerte de S.n Joaquin», with reference to the earlier order of 27 Dec.
