VERBATIM heading: '1786 - Mzo. 12 - Sn Diego. / Gob. Fages á Gonzales - Diligencias en averiguacion de indios azotados pr P. Peña.' Gloss: Proceedings in the inquiry into Indians flogged by Father Peña. Substance: the full procedural instruction. Gonzales is to pass to Santa Clara and, before two testigos de asistencia who can sign, name an interpreter, taking care he be 'de razon', making him understand the penalties he incurs if he violates the oath; then have Cabo Peralta give his declaration; then examine the 'Indios Californios' who gave notice, asking whether it is known to them by sight that P. Peña gave the blows of which their two countrymen died; if they say others told them, examine those and all who have news of the deed, working to establish whether the Indians died of those blows or naturally; to act throughout with circumspection; for the Indians of whom no oath is to be required, to make them understand through the interpreter the punishments they will suffer if they lie; after the declarations to proceed to ratification of the witnesses, beginning with the cabo then following with the Indians, and if they differ in anything to confront them ('los careará'); and if the whole notice proves false, to imprison the culpable and remit the process, original. Closes 'pp. 51-55' with Savage cross-reference '(Véase p. 254 de estos estrados)'. n34 is wholly the body of this document.

The originals of these records burned in the 1906 San Francisco fire. What survives is Thomas Savage’s 1870s copy, and this page describes that copy.
