Provincial Records, tomo V–VII · BANC MSS C-A 24, document 523

Marked with a + by Savage; heading 'Necesidad de capellanes. Muchos quehaceres de los P.P. Incomodidad pr familias'. The friars have too much to do: catechising gentiles, running the temporalidades, agriculture 'pa conseguir a comer', stock, making fresadas, tanning hides, church works, lodging religiosos, granaries and houses for the Indians, issuing rations, 'y particularmente los dias festivos en qe los Indios acostumbran manifestar sus necesidades de vestir, pidiendo fresadas, cotones y taparabos'. They therefore cannot serve the presidial companies. Quoted on the troops: 'padece la tropa y sus familias en haber de ir una o dos leguas a bautizar sus hijos, llevar a enterrar los cuerpos y a cumplir con la Iglesia - dejando las mujeres muchas veces abandonados sus hijos pequeños y sus casas por hallarse los moradores destacados' [the troops and their families suffer having to go one or two leagues to baptise children, bury the dead and fulfil church duties, the women often leaving small children and houses when the men are on detachment]. Asks that chaplains be appointed at 460 pesos salary.

The originals of these records burned in the 1906 San Francisco fire. What survives is Thomas Savage’s 1870s copy, and this page describes that copy.
