Provincial Records, tomo V–VII · BANC MSS C-A 24, document 569

Quoted testimony of the survivor “el indio Othon”: the men poured armed from a large temascal, tore the party apart “diciendo estos son nuestros enemigos”; the alcaldes indios tried to persuade them “q.e no iban á pelear ni á hacerles daño alguno” but they fought on “hasta q.e mataron a siete,” six new Christians having fled at the alcaldes’ order. Borica then quotes his informants: the Chimenes are “de caracter bronco y valiente,” continually at war with neighbouring rancherías “y particularm.te con los Tegunes[?]; q.e viven en la costa del norte en las cercanias del puerto de la Bodega; q.e su comida es amole, bellota y pinole - y q.e sus capitanes princip.s son Mulé y Yuma.” He “cree prudente no buscar venganza - porq.e enfin mataron á Indios y no vasallos del rey,” they are many, valiant, and live some 30 leagues from Bodega; to avoid such disasters he begged the padres “no mandar mas requisitorias á la otra banda.”

The originals of these records burned in the 1906 San Francisco fire. What survives is Thomas Savage’s 1870s copy, and this page describes that copy.
