Provincial State Papers, tomo VII–VIII · BANC MSS C-A 4, document 121

Fort-building + anti-Indian stratagems (Baja/San Miguel frontier). Ortega reports (from San Miguel, to 29 May) building a 60×50-vara adobe stockade (4 bastioned gates) against a reported large Indian gathering 'para atacar la tropa'; daily patrols; captives sent to warn that peace is refused — the troop 'decidida á poblarles el campo… con Indios muertos para que Coyotes y Pájaros los coman'; raids on the Ensenada/Tigre/Carmen rancherías dispersed the threat; 2 children baptized.
