English gloss: Fages, general orders to be observed by the sergeant in charge of the escort of the new Mission La Purísima Concepción. A full Fages escort instruction for a mission founded only months earlier, copied out at length across six leaves. Further articles: when Indians appear armed in numbers they are to be treated con agasajo and, without showing distrust, a third or half the escort is to take arms while the rest stand ready; only the capitanejos may enter the cuadro; 'que por ningun motivo se les den beldueques, aros de barril, pedazos de espadas ni otros instrumentos de que hacen armas'; no soldier or servant may go to the rancherías except on detailed service; a soldier who breaks this to trade gets 'ocho dias de Planton haciendo primas y modorras con cuatro cueras, pero si fuere por las Indias, ó que las solicite en el campo se le doblará la pena'; servants get eight days in grillete y cadena, doubled and sleeping in the cepo on repetition; any soldier or servant who strikes or takes private revenge on Indians is to be imprisoned and reported. Indian offenders: eight days in the cepo for wounding a beast, fifteen for killing one, released before their capitanejos with admonition, 'por la primera se les castiga con piedad, pero que si reinciden seran tratados con mayor rigor'. Live sentinel day and night; the caballada and stock under pastoría y vela. Friars going to the rancherías get 'dos ó tres hombres de escolta' and must not overnight outside the mission without notice to the presidio commander. He is to use feast days to find the best straight road from the mission to the new Laguna Larga road for the mail. Closes on n211 with orders on mail parties passing the escort, no cambalache of beasts, and an escort of two or three men for the mission mule train going to San Luis, then the page cite.
