Savage's heading: '1789 - Abril 14 - Chihuahua. (Ugarte y Loyola a Pedro Fages), sobre goce de sueldos de militares.' Encloses the R.O. of Bailío Frey Dn. Antonio Valdez (1 Oct 1788), relayed by Virrey Dn. Manuel Antº Flores 3 Feb 1789, on 'los sueldos que habran de gozar los oficiales del Exto ó Armada, que sirvan goviernos militares en Indias despues de haver sido relevados de ellos'. Rule: an officer who held the post by royal choice and was replaced keeps the pay of his grade if the jefe superior finds him useful and must be re-placed promptly; if not needed he is remitted to Spain with 'las doce pagas de su grado' per R.O. 29 Feb 1764. Officers who obtained the government by their own solicitation draw no pay at all once relieved.
