English gloss: Viceroy Azanza to the Governor of the Californias, on the founding of the Pueblo of San Jose de Guadalupe. Substance: the viceroy has received a detailed representation from the Padre Guardian of the Colegio de San Fernando setting out the injuries Mission Santa Clara suffers from the closeness at which the Pueblo of San Jose de Guadalupe was founded, notwithstanding the appeals and protests the Guardian says he made. Azanza states the representation has appeared to him well founded and worthy of attention in every respect, and on that view encloses a copy of it to the governor, directing him to proceed with all possible brevity to an inspection of the situation, limits, drawbacks and injuries referred to, going in person if necessary, and with copies of the appeals, complaints and protests on record in the archive of that government, to report at length and in detail on whatever occurs to him. Ends on n44 with Savage cite 'pp. 354-5'. Significance: this is the viceregal order that sets the whole San Jose versus Santa Clara boundary investigation in motion, and it is the direct answer to the Fr. Tomas de la Pena report copied at n45 to n50. Note: the year digits are clear here (1798) and Azanza held the viceroyalty from 1798 to 1800.
