Savage heading verbatim: '1801 - Ag.to 1 - Mont.ry / Carrillo á Arrillaga. Limites entre Sn. José y Sta. Clara.' English gloss: Carrillo to Arrillaga, limits between San Jose and Santa Clara. Substance: Carrillo reports that by oficio of 31 July last, Captain (graduado) Don Jose Arguello notified him that he had completed the division of limits between the Pueblo of San Jose and Mission Santa Clara, the task for which Arrillaga had commissioned him. There remains to Carrillo the charge of issuing to the justices of that pueblo the fitting orders to avoid disturbances between the vecindario and the natives of that mission: so that if the vecindario notices any damage done on their lands by the said Indians, they are to communicate it to the reverend fathers and lay their complaints before Carrillo, without taking the claim into their own hands. Complete on this one leaf; Savage cite 'pp. 356-7' at its foot. Significance: fixes 31 July 1801 as the completion date of the Arguello boundary division, and records the standing rule that settlers were forbidden self-help against Santa Clara neophytes over crop damage.
