Heading verbatim: '+ 1798 - Feb.º 1 - Mont.y / Borica. Sueldo á Poblad.s.' [= Borica, pay of the settlers]. Body opens verbatim: 'Estracto gral. ejecutado pr. Son 9 y tienen un sueldo anual de 116 p.s - 3 1/2 r.s' [= general extract drawn up by Hermenegildo Sal of the settlers drawing pay in the Villa de Branciforte from June to December 1797; there are 9 of them at an annual salary of 116 pesos 3 1/2 reales]. Three notas follow, running onto n377. Nota 1: no notice having reached the governor of California that a contract had been formalised between the said settlers and the Intendant of Guadalajara, who despatched them to the Peninsula pursuant to the viceroy Branciforte orders, he resolved to credit their pay from the day they disembarked at Monterey. [= the annual salary of 116 pesos 3 1/2 reales runs from 12 May 1797 to the same day exclusive of 1799, only 70 being payable in the 3 following years per the Reglamento of the Peninsula and the viceroy superior order of 9 Nov. 1796]. The figure 70 here is written with an unmistakable 7; the parallel passage on n378 reads 60, see issues. Nota 3: the 145 pesos supplied to the settlers by the Intendant of Guadalajara for the journey from that city to San Blas, and the 20 pesos given for bagages to the corporal and soldier who escorted them, must be borne separately by the Real Hacienda, since the settlers were only carried on the muster from the day they landed at Monterey. Closing cite on n377: 'pp. 904-5.'
